about

The Killing Popes - Ego Kill$
Released 6/25/2021
download / CD / Vinyl
Label: Shhpuma powered by Cleanfeed

The second album from The Killing Popes is a remarkable sequel to the debut album Ego Pills (2019), from the anarchic Berlin-based group led by drummer/composer Oli Steidle. The release is the collaborative brainchild of Steidle and producer/keyboardist Dan Nicholls, who have pooled their diverse creative input into a sophisticated, idiosyncratic and highly atmospheric sound world.
Phillip Gropper (sax), Frank Möbus (git), Dan Nicholls (keyboards), Phil Donkin (bass) and Oliver Steidle (drums) move with near telepathic understanding through the 11 tracks, integrating various elements from jazz, improvised and electronic music into indescribable and futuristic collages.

The music speaks about contemporary issues, from capitalism to the cult of the individual, whilst retaining the humorous and intelligent spirit which this band is famous for.
The rhythmic structures in Steidle and Nicholls’ compositions are multidimensional, but not for the sake of complexity. Instead they alter and condense familiar rhythms and structures into energetic and innovative grooves.
Guest contributions come from Jelena Kuljic and Natalie Sandtorv, who strongly cement their position as two of Europe’s most expressive and individual vocalists.
With the support of Musikfonds, the recording and production techniques provide a level of detail and quality which offers the listener an outstanding sound experience, regardless of whether the music is heard on CD, vinyl or digital download.

With Ego Kill$, The Killing Popes are more killing than ever! With Dan Nicholls as a visionary producer, they have created an ultra-modern album which is likely to be much talked about in the music world.
