about

Dear listeners,
I’d like to use these lines to thank you for your interest in our music. I hope that the time you’ll spend listening to this recording will be entertaining and that at the end of it you’ll regret that it passed so quickly.
I have been playing in many bands as a sideman for years; many of them differ from each other in their stylistic and compositional approach, but they all have improvisation as their common denominator. It is a, if not the defining element for me, which I can’t do without.
I have never been fixed on one style of playing music: I am no purist, I am enthusiastic about music and don’t want to be restrained by stylistic limitations. I am at home in Jazz, Bebop, Free Jazz, Classical Music, Neue Musik, Hip Hop, Punk etc.
Hence, on this production - the first where I am responsible for the composition - there is a colorful mix of different music styles. I am grateful to Frank and Kalle for turning my ideas into music.
I’ve always wanted to tell stories with music. I think one should be able to hear that a song is about something! And it should be more than mere entertainment! If I compare it to movies, I’m more drawn to films like „12 Angry Men“ (1957) than to „Independence Day“. I could also say, that the so-called mainstream holds no interest for me. In times like these, where consumerism holds sway over everything else, where values and aspirations are in danger of being washed away, musicians should offer an alternative. In this context I find it irritating when people from the periphery of music creators claim that artists who play radical music only play for themselves and not for the listener. Nonsense! Along the same lines is the idea that musicians should pick up their listeners from where they are, figuratively speaking. How can we suppose we know „where“ someone is? Everybody is in a different place! In truth, these people want musicians to handle the listener with kid gloves since a more comfortable  listener makes for a better and more eager consumer.
The paradox is, that an interested listener doesn’t need to patronized like this. I have played myriads of concerts where promoters where sick with worry because of a supposed conflict between the music to be played and the supposed expectations of the audience. In the end their worries were always unfounded. The audience reaction should have showed the promoters that it pays off to be courageous. Courageous by presenting music which doesn’t want to go the path of the least resistance, music where you might not be able to count on everyone loving it. I think the listener is underestimated most of the time. Especially by concert and festival promoters. What counts is the ratings and the bottom line. So boooring!
I will leave you with these thoughts and hope to meet you at a concert one day.
In the meantime, my friends, colleagues and I, which fit the description above will continue doing what we do…
